Just a few minutes ago I signed on for another exciting interior decorating project in London and am elated at the possibilities. For new homes in London vary greatly, as you probably well know, and I have yet to cross the threshold of this one. Thus, my imagination is taking over, and running in many different directions. To say I know very little about the space would be an understatement, but that makes it quite thrilling at the same time as daunting.

I was put into contact with this client by a friend and jumped at the chance. Now I am not going to do any name-dropping, but the client is a famous author, and one whose books I am actually familiar with believe it or not. As for any additional hints, oh maybe just one or two more. She writes murder mysteries so involved, and complex with twists and turns that would give good old Agatha Christie’s character Inspector Poirot a run for his money. Not only does this please me to no end, but also her works have garnered much literary praise and attention.

The last hint is that she is in the middle of drafting out a deal to make at least one of her novels into a film. So you will forgive me if I am both ecstatic over the creative possibilities that may exist when it comes to decorating the house, and am a tad star struck with the thought of a celebrity client that I finally know of their work. For, I have designed for other well known individuals, but were either completely oblivious to what they had composed, negotiated or led.

The most exhilarating part is that she has said that she wants to be very involved with the selection of colour scheme, furniture style and layout. With a mind like hers, one that can craft stories that leave the reader questioning who dunnit, and how they did it till the very end, I am certain her ideas and input will be outstanding and inspiring. And to be entirely frank, I am going to need a double espresso to help me come out of my shell the first time we meet up.

Though I have the whole new home London thing down pat, I feel like a child gearing up for the first day of school. I can just feel it in my bones that this is going to be a real treat of a project, and must remember to thank my friend profusely for mentioning my name.

Designing homes these days, even from an aesthetic standpoint, is a very different thing than it once was. Of course, this is partially due to simple changes in style, and some decorative trends being more popular than others at this time. However, there are also other factors at play. For example, these days modernity is trending upward, simply because new technologies and home features are appearing to be almost futuristic in appearance. This is making it very popular for people to go for “sleek” and “sexy” in their homes. It is also not uncommon for chic new homes to be very energy efficient, which can sometimes affect the house’s appliances or features. With all of this in mind, if you are looking for a new television or center piece to bring together your re-designed living room, you need not look any further than Marks and Spencer and its selection of phenomenal LED TV’s.

To begin with, LED televisions offer the very best in image, in multiple ways. To begin with, most of these machines are, visually, beautiful. Whereas older TVs, and even less advanced flat screens, can look very clunky, awkward and appear to be made of cheap plastic, the newest LED televisions define the terms “sleek” and “sexy,” and can really become the central focus of a room. Additionally, these television provide absolutely outstanding picture quality, meaning that when your television is turned on it is essentially a beautiful piece of furniture emitting a stunning display. You can’t beat that if you’re looking for aesthetics.

Additionally, it is well worth noting that new LED televisions are extremely energy efficient, and therefore “eco-friendly.” This in fact (along with a few small differences in picture quality and viewing preferences) is what separates LEDs from other flat screen options like Plasma and LCD TVs. While many of these flat screen options are still considered more eco-friendly than their bulky, non-flat screen predecessors, LED TVs are simply the most advanced technology of the bunch, and can provide you with the very best in both looks and energy efficiency.

Ultimately, particularly if you are looking to make a modern or trendy living room in your home, a television of the type and quality of the ones discussed above is a wonderful thing to consider. Again, many people’s main concerns when designing homes are energy efficiency and aesthetic pleasure, and a brand new LED TV offers you the very best option in both areas. You certainly won’t regret your purchase when you realize the full effect of its stunning visual presence and image quality.

I recently got a phone call from my niece who was recently married and is decorating the small flat she shares with her husband, Jeremy. Much to my relief I learned that neither of them had lived in the place when they were single. Mainly, I was comforted to know that Jeremy had not been there before she was, as he may have already staked a claim with those quintessentially bachelor items that can take years to wean men off of.

As it turns out, they were working with a clean slate, but were limited when it came to space. She wanted to know what I might suggest to make it look like they had a champagne budget when they were working with a draught beer one. I directed her to layer certain pieces to give the room depth and texture, but to avoid cluttering it with too many things. In addition, to hang curtain rods closer to the ceiling than she normally would to create an illusion of height. Finally, I stressed the importance of using mirrors to reflect light into the room from light sources.

That call was followed up by an email a few days later with two photos attached. The new couple had supplied me with a before and after picture. She had listened to my recommendations to perfection, and I could not have been more proud for her. I hope she puts copies of those pictures in a photo album.

When fashioning a dining room of any sort there are a few basic principles that you are best to abide by. First off is the placement of the table and dining chairs. The space that you are using for the dining area will often establish this for you. However, if you have a large room then you can experiment with the shape and set up of the table. You may choose to use a big picture window as the anchor, or a chandelier that was previously hung, and these will make where to put them abundantly clear.

But if you are dealing with a smaller area, there are certain shapes that will fit well, and others that should be avoided. As such, those slighter spaces will probably only allow you to set the table and chairs up in one or two ways. So the defining of the placement should be easy, if not already predetermined for you.

A round table is said to be the superior shape if you wish to invite conversation amongst all at the table. It will also usually be simpler to navigate a round table when serving your guests, and when you all are seated and get up from the table. So, this will be an excellent choice for more confined areas. Surprisingly, there are fewer of these on the furniture market. As such, though a round table may be your first choice, you may resort to a square table, as it will also suit a little room. Now, if you have a long room, a rectangular table will probably be preferential. Outside of that, square ones are usually recommended in a large square space.

As for the chairs, if you are going for a certain look, the style might be dictated based upon being dubbed as modern, classic, formal, and so on. However, no matter what style you select, the chairs absolutely should be relaxing. No matter how spectacular a dinning room might appear, if you and those around the table are not entirely comfortable, then you both will welcome the first opportunity to leave it.

You will also be doing yourself a great service if you choose seats that are of a material that will not show every morsel or liquid that has ever come in contact with it. First off, visitors entering a dining area with delicately covered chairs will be on high alert not to do anything to soil them. This automatically alters their mood, and therefore their experience. Second, certain fabrics will be easy to wipe down, or conceal a minor faux pas, and possibly even a major one.

In sum, figure out the placement of the table along with the shape of the table prior to making any other decisions. Then, if you want to be praised, pick comfortable chairs. And if you ant to avoid annoyance, and replacement, get chairs that are accident resistant to go along with that table.

Valentine’s Day always brings about the notion of romance and beautiful things in red and pink. Things associated with romance are emphasized at this time of year, but why limit it I say. There are several inspirational sights at this celebratory time of love that can bolster the theme of one of your rooms.

Take a cue from the lovely pink and red peonies, tulips, and of course roses. Many of them will have multiple shades on each petal and can lead you to the absolute perfect shade of the most romantic colours on the planet. Then make that the prominent colour on the walls of any room in your house, or just simply an accent wall. Because amorous tones can fill a space with a lovely vibe, and a sentimental feeling that can make a room more comfortable than any other.

Right now the covers of magazines are wonderful inspirations for family room decorations. Big bushy Christmas trees with tons of dazzlingly wrapped gifts below make for enviable settings. Often these images prompt us to replicate portions of the set up in our own abodes.

The thing I love most about this is that many online magazines and home focused websites have taken to listing where you can obtain several of the articles in the photo, and even the cost of each also. While it is fun conducting your own search and locating the exact item, or one more than passable, this is not the season of abundant spare time. So, I think the sharing of the details is ingenious, and because of it our living room is looking even more celebratory this year.

If you are bothering to decorate a Christmas tree, chances are you would like it to be something special. Exquisite like the ones you see in store windows, on magazine covers, or at concerts. So, it makes perfect sense to use those as inspiration just as you would when replicating the design of a room. Do not be shy to take a picture of a decorated tree that you admire, or to cut out images from magazines. These make superb references, and are much more reliable than your memory in most cases. Then once you have dressed you own tree, take a picture of it to compare to the one, or ones that inspired you in the first place. Put them together in an album, repeat next year and the year after, and you will have a wonderful collection of Christmas memories to pass on to the next generation.

What is commonly appreciated in inspiration rooms are the abundance of indoor plants. It is very feng shui to strategically place plants in ones home, but there are precautions that must be observed. Although there are many conditions that need to be observed in preparation for a houseplant, lighting is one of the most important. Natural light isn't as necessary for plant growth for houseplants in comparison to outdoor plants but it should be considered. A mixture of artificial or fluorescent lighting with positioning in south-facing windows for full sunlight, aids photosynthesis for your new plant. Should you overlook these guidelines you will do more harm than good. The two main things to be wary of are which rooms you do not want to put live plants, and the types of plants you do not want inside your home at all.

Specifically, bedrooms are not ideal for living plants. While a great deal of your life is spent in your bedroom, it is mainly for the purpose of slowing down, indulging in romance and relaxing. Thus, the energetic vibe that plants, and the water you give them, produce is misplaced in that space.

Then, you should also take note of the types of plants, and trees you introduce into your home. The bonsai is one to skip all together, so as adorable as they may be pick something else. Also, pay attention to the types of leaves you choose: spiky or round can make a huge difference.

When designing a home, if you have the opportunity to do so, I highly recommend including a gym space. It has been substantiated time and time again that when you have an allocated space for a hobby, passion, or activity that you will participate in it much more frequently.

Personally, I enjoy doing my exercises in private. Therefore, when I was given the chance to add a personal workout area in my new house I jumped at such a prospect. Then I immediately reverted to finding an inspiration room to use as my template. I pulled from a couple of sources, including the setting in a Tracy Anderson workout DVD, and an Asian based spa room.

I am ecstatic to say that after being in the house for 5 days, I have already used the exercise room 4 times. This is already a record of sorts for me, so I am perfectly delighted.

One of the basic approaches to interior design is to acquire inspiration for the room decoration from the room itself. The intricate details of a hand carved staircase banister, or the repetitive pattern of parquet flooring have been the basis for many a decorator’s plan.

In fact, the existence of such specifics in some cases can barely be ignored. Thus, one designer’s blessing can alternatively play out to be another’s burden. Without a serious renovation, what exists in the space will often dictate, as well it should.

In the February edition of Architectural Digest, this premise is well depicted. A Fifth Avenue, New York City, apartment received a makeover and the description of the entryway identifies the influence that the staircase had in the revision. The designer worked closely with contrasting lines and bursts of colour. The technique rings true in both large and small spaces, and worldwide.
